2007 Corporate Social Responsibility Report

Community and Education

U.S. Operations: Outreach

In addition to our A Day Made Better initiative and the introduction of the OfficeMax Volunteer Program, our U.S. Operations also engaged in a number of other philanthropic activities.

OfficeMax Associate Giving Campaign

Held annually, our Associate Giving Campaign provides associates with opportunities to make their charitable donations go twice as far through payroll deductions to eligible charities that are matched by the company. The eligible charities to which they made pledges in 2007 included Adopt-A-Classroom and United Way.

OfficeMax Naperville Teacher Innovator Award

Shortly after OfficeMax moved our corporate headquarters to Naperville, Illinois, United States, we launched the OfficeMax Teacher Innovator Award with the Naperville Community Unit School District 203 and its nonprofit fundraising arm, the Naperville Education Foundation. This program was one of many that inspired our A Day Made Better initiative in 2007, the largest single philanthropic event in the company’s history.

Once a month, a review committee selects a teacher who demonstrates innovation and creativity in the classroom that ties in with the school district’s professional development goals. The nominations come from community members, fellow teachers, administrators, parents, and students over the age of 13.

While class is in session, a winning teacher is surprised by his or her principal and OfficeMax associates bearing flowers, balloons and the OfficeMax Teacher Innovator of the Month Award. The teacher is then presented with a $400 gift card, digital camera, and photo printer, which are donated to the Naperville Education Foundation and, as a result of the award, are designated for use in that teacher’s classroom.

MaxPerks Rewards for Teachers

Established in 1992, our MaxPerks customer loyalty programs provide rewards for both educators and business customers. In 2007, we significantly enhanced the MaxPerks Rewards for Teachers program, by increasing the monetary benefits available and by adding benefits for recycling. More information on the program expansion can be found in the Customer Value section of this report.

School-Themed Marketing

School-Themed MarketingIn 2007, OfficeMax continued its departure from traditional back-to-school advertising, with its Schooled® television series. Partnering with DDB Chicago, Hollywood Records and All-American Rejects, we created an original-content back-to-school television special.

To thank the school faculty, staff and students, OfficeMax donated $60,000 to the school to support programs and clubs that were threatened due to budget cuts.

Chair Trade Up Event to Benefit Goodwill Industries’ Career Services Program

In the spirit of helping people reach their full potential, OfficeMax sponsored our second Great Chair Trade Up Event, which took place in all U.S. Retail stores June 10-16, 2007.

OfficeMax customers that brought a gently used office chair to their local OfficeMax store during the event received a 10 percent discount on a new office chair purchase. OfficeMax donated all usable chairs to Goodwill Industries for resale, helping Goodwill fund career services for people with disabilities and disadvantages in local communities.

The Jeff Sluman and OfficeMax Drive for Hope Program

Since 2004, PGA Tour golfer, Jeff Sluman, and OfficeMax have partnered on the Jeff Sluman and OfficeMax Drive for Hope Program. Under the partnership, OfficeMax donates funds based on Sluman’s performance on the PGA tour. The 2007 program raised more than $87,500 in all, half of which went to the City of Hope and half of which was split among Sluman-designated charities.
