Expanded MaxPerks Program

Expanded MaxPerks ProgramOur MaxPerks customer loyalty program was established in 1992 and revamped in 2003 for both businesses and educators. In 2007, we enhanced the program by substantially increasing the amount of financial rewards available to teachers, and by introducing rewards for recycling ink and toner cartridges and cellular telephones.

Increased Rewards for Teachers

MaxPerks rewards can be spent like cash at any OfficeMax retail store, on our Web site, or through over-the-phone orders. In 2007, we added a Back-to-School Bonus Program that provides educators up to $500 in MaxPerks rewards in addition to the standard benefits described below. The Bonus Program, which runs from July 1st through September 30th, rewards teachers for doing something they’ve done for decades: preparing back-to-school shopping lists for their students.

Standard MaxPerks Rewards for Teachers benefits provide program members $10 in MaxPerks rewards every time they purchase $75 in qualifying merchandise, for up to $100 in MaxPerks rewards annually. Teachers can also earn an additional 2 percent credit on ink and toner purchases.

Taking advantage of the OfficeMax Back-to-School Bonus Program is easy. Teachers simply enroll in MaxPerks Rewards for Teachers at www.officemax.com/maxperks, create a customized back-to-school shopping list for their students, and then distribute the list to students and their parents by e-mail or printed copy. The list includes a special MaxPerks identification number that ensures teachers get the appropriate credit for all qualifying purchases. If teachers don't want to create a list through the MaxPerks Web site, they can still take advantage of the Back-to-School Bonus Program by issuing students a special MaxPerks identification number.

During the Back-to-School Bonus Program, teacher program members earn $10 for every $100 of the qualified purchases made by their students, up to $500 in MaxPerks rewards. Over 100,000 teachers signed up during the first Back-to-School Bonus Program, bringing the total number of educators enrolled in MaxPerks Rewards for Teachers to 581,000. Approximately $9 million in rewards were earned by teachers in 2007.

MaxPerks Rewards for Teachers is a win-win situation, providing teachers much-needed financial relief, giving students the opportunity to help their teachers, and building sales and customer loyalty for OfficeMax.

New Rewards for Recycling

In 2007, OfficeMax introduced recycling incentives to our MaxPerks Rewards for Business and MaxPerks Rewards for Teachers programs. The MaxPerks recycling program facilitates the collection and recycling of ink and toner cartridges and cell phone batteries, and rewards our best customers for doing so. We accept and recycle all ink, toner, and cell phone battery brands. However, rewards are given for Dell®, HP® and Lexmark® cartridges, and for all cell phone batteries submitted.

In designing the program, we placed an emphasis on simplicity and ease, with the following steps:

1. Order free collection materials through the MaxPerks Web site.
2. Place the collection materials throughout the school or business.
3. Mail in the pre-paid collection containers with recyclables, or schedule a pickup. All materials and packaging are coded with a personal MaxPerks identification number.
4. Track activity online with weekly updates regarding submitted materials and accumulated rewards.
5. Earn $1 in MaxPerks rewards, up to $300 annually for every Dell, HP, and Lexmark ink or toner cartridge and every cell phone battery returned, regardless of where it was originally purchased.
