Diversity and Inclusion
Performance Metrics: Workforce Diversity and Inclusion
During 2007, the OfficeMax Diversity Council formed a Metrics Team, which began developing baselines and methods for measuring and reporting diversity within the OfficeMax organization. The Metrics Team will make recommendations for streamlining our methodology and improving data collection techniques. This will help us set placement and representation goals and report on the effectiveness of our diversity efforts. Our diversity metrics will become a major component of the OfficeMax CEO performance scorecard, currently under development.
Human Rights Campaign Corporate Equality Index
The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) is America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender equality. Annually since 2002, HRC has issued its Corporate Equality Index (CEI), providing an in-depth analysis and rating of large U.S. employers and their policies and practices pertinent to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender employees, consumers and investors. The primary source of rating information is HRC’s Internet-based CEI survey.
In 2007, OfficeMax submitted the HRC survey for the first time and received a score of 75 (on a scale of zero to 100). This score places us well above the average score for the 38 companies rated in HRC’s Retail and Consumer Products category, but just below the overall average score of 81 for the 519 total employers rated in 2007. While we recognize that there is still much work to be done, our 2007 score represents rapid and significant progress. It is our belief that, had we submitted CEI surveys in 2006 and 2005, our scores would have been 15 and zero, respectively.
OfficeMax All-Associate Engagement Survey
OfficeMax conducted an All-Associate Engagement Survey in 2007 to help determine how well the company is performing on a wide variety of factors, including professional development, associate communication and management leadership.
Based on responses to five questions within the survey, 77 percent of associates feel that the company practices inclusive management and offers an environment that respects diversity. OfficeMax management will use this and other survey results to drive associate-focused initiatives and to keep associates in mind when making decisions.
