2007 Corporate Social Responsibility Report

Natural Environment

Performance Metrics

OfficeMax Store FrontThe environmental performance data reported by OfficeMax aligns with our three primary opportunities for managing environmental impacts: product stewardship, facility energy management and transportation, and refers to our U.S. Operations only.

Materials disposition data include OfficeMax recycled and waste materials, as well as applicable materials recycled as part of our customer take-back programs. Due to the nature of these take-back programs, some of the materials recycled may not have been purchased from OfficeMax and, as such, the quantities reported do not necessarily correspond with the total amount of materials sold or used by OfficeMax.

CO2, SOx, and NOx emissions data have been determined from our actual energy and fuel usage, both direct and indirect, including natural gas, gasoline, diesel fuel, bio-diesel fuel, propane and electricity usage. There were no direct emissions from OfficeMax resulting from manufacturing processes, as we do not directly manufacture products. Energy used to power our facilities is expressed both in total usage and, new for 2007, on an electricity-usage-per-square-foot basis.

In this year’s report, OfficeMax includes several performance indicators not included in last year’s report. These include the following:
• Percentage of materials used that are recycled input materials
• Electricity usage per-square-foot
• Gasoline usage
• Propane usage
