Spotlight Canada: Grand & Toy

Grand & Toy Think GreenGrand & Toy is a wholly owned, independently operated subsidiary of OfficeMax Incorporated, headquartered in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Grand & Toy has recently established a Sustainability Vision that aligns with OfficeMax’s Corporate Social Responsibility efforts.

Grand & Toy’s Sustainability Vision was developed with assistance from an international consultancy that helps companies build and execute strategies to extract value from emerging issues such as corporate social responsibility, climate change and the changing energy landscape. The consultancy’s team was led by a former Federal Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development of Canada.

Comprising the Sustainability Vision is a seven-pillar sustainability platform, the first three of which directly address environmental issues. These include the following:
• Environmental Footprint
– Minimize our own environmental impact through supply chain, packaging, recycling and waste, and facilities footprint.
• Product Stewardship – Develop the most successful line of environmentally responsible products and services offerings on the market.
• Sustainable/Ethical Sourcing
– As a change agent, accelerate the market penetration of environmentally preferred, more sustainable paper products; embed corporate responsibility practices in our supply chain.

In fulfilling the Vision, Grand & Toy has embarked on a number of efforts and programs, including the following (more details can be found in the Product Stewardship section):
• Collecting and recycling toner cartridges
• Working with customers to reduce order frequency and efficiently schedule deliveries to minimize the time our trucks are on the road
• Reducing internal paper usage and encouraging online ordering and payment
• Reducing energy and resource consumption
• Partnering with leading furniture suppliers that manufacture GREENGUARD certified products
• Offering 97 percent of its papers for sale bearing internationally recognized forestry certifications
