Report and Corporate Profiles
Report Profile
This is OfficeMax Incorporated’s second public report on our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) performance, based on the Global Reporting Initiative G3 Sustainability Reporting Guidelines. Our first G3-based report, covering primarily calendar year (CY) 2006, was issued in 2007.
For our U.S. Operations it is our belief that the information and metrics contained within represents a G3 guideline application level “C,” while containing many elements of application level “B.” Our 2007 report covers several G3 indicators that were not reported on in our 2006 report (see Natural Environment Performance Metrics).
We have included a GRI Index to provide the reader with a quick reference to the GRI indicators on which we have reported, along with a detailed Table of Contents to aid the reader’s navigation of this report.
For our wholly-owned Grand & Toy subsidiary, with operations throughout Canada, we have provided CSR strategy and anecdotal information that highlights our commitment to CSR. We have also provided anecdotal information regarding our CSR activities for our wholly-owned operations in Australia and New Zealand (Australasia), and our majority-owned (51 percent) joint venture, Grupo OfficeMax, in Mexico.
The report content focuses primarily on calendar year (CY) 2007, but includes key CY 2005 and 2006 information and metrics to help establish a baseline for comparing future performance. References to early CY 2008 events are included where they aid understanding of our CSR history and near-term strategy.
Basis for Reporting Boundary. OfficeMax is committed to reporting substantive information on our CSR plans and performance. Data collection protocols are the most mature and robust in our U.S. Operations, which enables us to substantially fulfill the G3 reporting guidelines for this unit. Activities are underway to establish and/or refine data collection structures and activities in other geographic areas. As the company continues integrating its various entities, we will continue publishing a report that is more representative of our global operations.
2006 Report Clarifications. This report includes, in the applicable sections, restatements regarding several data points reported in our 2006 report: two air emission metrics and miles traveled. None of these re-statements are believed to have any material impact on our operations.
Forward-Looking Information. This publication may contain forward-looking statements within the meaning of federal securities laws. In light of the risks and uncertainties involved, we invite you to read the Risk Factors and Forward-Looking Information sections of OfficeMax’s Form 10-K for fiscal year 2007.
