Financial and Non-Financial Benefits
Insurance Coverage
In 2007, OfficeMax contracted with a new health insurance provider to begin in 2008 to secure better service and more cost-effective care for associates and their families. The full range of benefits offered to associates, however, remained essentially unchanged. Full-time associates are eligible for medical, dental, vision, and prescription drug coverage; dependent care and health care flexible spending accounts; Employee Assistance Program and behavioral health coverage; short- and long-term disability insurance; basic life insurance (and optional coverage for associate and family); and basic accidental death and dismemberment insurance (and optional family coverage). Some benefits are also available to eligible part-time associates through a separate provider.
Our Canadian subsidiary, Grand & Toy, offers similar benefits to its full-time associates.
Savings Plan
Both full-time and part-time associates are eligible to participate in the OfficeMax Savings Plan, our qualified tax-deferred 401(k) plan. Associates may contribute from 1 to 50 percent of their eligible compensation to the plan on a pre-tax basis. After one year of service, associates are eligible for the company match of $0.50 per $1.00 they contribute, up to 6 percent of their eligible compensation.
A similar program is available to full- and part-time associates at our Grand & Toy subsidiary, with some variation at facilities covered by collective bargaining agreements.
Important Non-Financial Help: The Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
OfficeMax believes that helping our associates in times of personal need or struggle is not only the right thing to do, but it makes good business sense. Employees that are distracted by serious personal issues are likely to be less productive and more prone to mistakes. For these reasons, OfficeMax – and its Canadian subsidiary, Grand & Toy – each offer an EAP to full-time associates, featuring a full range of expert services available by telephone and/or online.
The EAP is completely confidential, and is administered by a third-party resource that specializes in behavioral health and wellness services. It is designed to provide associates with the information, resources, referrals and discounts they need to help them through trying times, such as work-related stress or conflicts, marital or relationship problems, mental health issues, and legal and/or financial worries.
