Community and Education
Management Approach
Unless otherwise noted, the information in this report regarding Community and Education efforts pertain to our U.S. Operations.
The efforts of OfficeMax entities around the world reflect a culture of outreach and strategic giving. Children, educators and educational institutions benefit from the efforts of OfficeMax, our associates, subsidiaries and majority-owned joint venture. In 2008, OfficeMax’s fundraising efforts and product donations provided over $3.9 million to nonprofit organizations and schools worldwide.
In the United States, the primary focus of our community outreach efforts is to provide assistance to kindergarten through twelfth grade (K-12) educators and schools in need. We believe this strategic focus benefits OfficeMax and society at large, and advances our Diversity and Inclusion mission. To this end, we launched the following initiatives in recent years, including a new partnership in 2008.
• Partnership with Kids in Need Foundation (launched 2008) – provides donations of merchandise to be distributed to educators who teach in schools in need.
• A Day Made Better – the largest community outreach event in our company’s history got bigger in 2008, rewarding 1,300 teachers at 1,300 schools in need, in a single day.
• The OfficeMax Volunteer Program – involves OfficeMax associates in decisions regarding which initiatives to support, within pre-established guidelines.
OfficeMax continues to support causes outside of education, but on a more limited basis than before. See the Outreach Around the World section of this report for more information.
