Expanded MaxPerks Rewards Program

MaxPerks Rewards for Business

In July 2008, we significantly enhanced the MaxPerks Rewards for Business program, formerly known as the MaxPerks customer loyalty program. In addition to adding greater benefits and flexibility, we also gave the program a creative facelift and a more targeted name. Program enhancements include the following:

• Increased monetary benefits. Members can now earn $25 for every $500 they spent on qualified items in a calendar year (the equivalent of 5 percent). Prior to the change, members earned 1-2 percent back when they spent $300 or more on qualified items during a calendar quarter.

• Introduced Bonus Reward offers to the program. Members can now earn additional MaxPerks rewards for purchasing items marked with a Bonus Reward symbol. These offers also allow members to earn rewards faster, while still building toward their $500 spend threshold.

• Moved from a quarterly to a yearly program to enable more members to accumulate rewards over a longer period of time. Prior to this change, members’ accounts were reset to $0 at the beginning of each quarterly earning cycle.

• Created monthly electronic account statements in members’ online accounts. The statements reflect rewards that members may have earned in the month before. Prior to this, members were mailed their rewards, which could take four to six weeks after the end of a quarter to receive.

MaxPerks Rewards for Teachers

In 2008, we continued the Back-to-School Bonus Program, added in 2007, which provides educators up to $500 in MaxPerks rewards in addition to the standard benefits described below. The Bonus Program, which runs from July 1st through September 30th, rewards teachers for doing something they’ve done for decades: preparing back-to-school shopping lists for their students.

Standard MaxPerks Rewards for Teachers benefits provide program members $10 in MaxPerks rewards every time they purchase $75 in qualifying merchandise, for up to $100 in MaxPerks rewards annually. Teachers can also earn an additional 2 percent credit on ink and toner purchases.

During the Back-to-School Bonus Program, teacher program members earn $10 for every $100 of the qualified purchases made by their students, up to $500 in MaxPerks rewards. Over 75,000 teachers signed up during the 2008 Back-to-School Bonus Program, bringing the total number of educators enrolled in MaxPerks Rewards for Teachers to more than 600,000. Approximately $9 million in rewards were earned by teachers in 2008.

Increased Rewards for Recycling

In 2008, OfficeMax increased the rewards associated with our MaxPerks Ink and Toner Recycling program. The program was added in 2007 as an environmentally responsible way for our business and educational customers to dispose of their cartridges, while providing additional opportunities to earn rewards.

The MaxPerks recycling program facilitates the collection and recycling of ink and toner cartridges and cell phone batteries, and rewards our best customers for doing so. We accept and recycle all ink, toner, and cell phone battery brands. However, rewards are given for Dell®, HP® and Lexmark® cartridges, and for all cell phone batteries submitted.

In this program, members can earn $3 for any HP, Dell, or Lexmark cartridge they recycle in-store, up to 10 cartridges per member per week ($30 maximum reward per week per member). Prior to 2008, members earned $1 in MaxPerks rewards, up to $300 annually.
