Diversity and Inclusion
Performance Metrics: Workforce Diversity and Inclusion
In 2008, the OfficeMax Diversity Council Metrics Team formalized a CEO scorecard and a metrics process. Quarterly reports have been developed and delivered to every business unit in our U.S. Operations. We are monitoring associate demographics, placement and attrition. These reports are being used to gauge the effectiveness of our diversity efforts.
Human Rights Campaign Corporate Equality Index
The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) is America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender equality. Annually since 2002, HRC has issued its Corporate Equality Index (CEI), providing an in-depth analysis and rating of large U.S. employers and their policies and practices pertinent to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender employees, consumers and investors. The primary source of rating information is HRC’s Internet-based CEI survey.
In 2008, OfficeMax submitted the HRC survey for the second time and received a score of 80 (on a scale of zero to 100), up from 75 in 2007. This score places us just below the average score of 82 for the 34 companies rated in HRC’s Retail and Consumer Products category and just below the overall average score of 83 for the 584 total employers rated in 2008. While we recognize that there is still much work to be done, our 2008 score represents rapid and significant progress. It is our belief that, had we submitted CEI surveys in 2006 and 2005, our scores would have been 15 and zero, respectively.
