Supplies, Electronics and FurnishingsOfficeMax offers a range of environmentally preferable products for sale, including a variety of non-paper recycled-content office supplies, energy-efficient computers and business machines, and office furnishings manufactured in a manner that lessens their impact on indoor air quality.

Environmentally Preferable Office Supplies

OfficeMax offers many choices for the environmentally conscious customer, including the following products and more:
• Natural, biodegradable cleaners packaged in reused bottles.
• Biodegradable trash bags.
• Biodegradable/compostable cutlery, cups, bowls and plates. (The plates and bowls are made from sugar cane fiber, the cutlery and cups are made from plant starch.)
• Furniture certified to have minimal impact on indoor air quality.
• According to 2009 Boise Paper industry survey, OfficeMax offers the largest selection of recycled content and FSC certified business papers.
• Remanufactured toners

Energy-efficient Computers and Business Machines

Eighty-eight percent of the computers and 90 percent of the business machines sold through our U.S. stores, meet the strict energy-efficiency guidelines that qualify them for ENERGY STAR® designation. ENERGY STAR is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy dedicated to helping businesses and individuals save money and protect the environment through energy-efficient products and practices.

Low-emitting Office Furnishings

Certain materials used in the manufacture of office furniture – such as pressed wood, solvent-based coatings, glues, fiberglass insulation, and fabrics – can adversely affect indoor air quality by emitting formaldehyde and other volatile organic compounds.

OfficeMax offers a number of furniture products that have achieved the Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) Indoor Advantage or GREENGUARD certifications for low chemical and particle emissions. SCS is a leading third-party provider of certification, auditing and testing services, and standards. The GREENGUARD Certification ProgramSM is an industry-independent, third-party testing program for low-emitting products and materials established by the GREENGUARD Environmental Institute, whose mission is to improve public health and quality of life through programs that improve indoor air.
