2008 Corporate Social Responsibility Report

Working Environment

Safety and Health Metrics

In 2008, OfficeMax refined its methodology for tracking and reporting work-related incidents. In conjunction with this change, we introduced a new safety metric, the Safety Severity Index (SSI). The SSI replaced our past safety metrics, the Total Incident Rate (TIR) and the Days Away, Restricted or Transferred (DART) rate. The SSI is calculated by adding the incident case rate, lost workday severity rate, lost time case rate, and restricted duty and job transfer case rate, then multiplying the sum by an industry standard 200,000, and then dividing the product by the total number of hours worked.

The SSI is tracked monthly on a regional, site-specific basis and performance measures are integrated into leadership goals and objectives and compensation bonus structures. A monthly report is distributed to the onsite leadership team, as well as to the regional vice presidents.

OfficeMax set distinct 2008 SSI goals for our Contract Fulfillment Centers (CFCs) and our PowerMax distribution centers. The goals were 25 and 20.2, respectively. In 2008, 63 percent of the CFCs and 100 percent of the PowerMax centers met this goal.
